According to family records, Simon Hofbauer, his wife, son-in-law and his new wife, his granddaughters, and his granddaughters' paternal grandfather immigrated to Wisconsin from Bavaria . On July 02, 1851 they left for the United States. They stayed in LeHavre, France for a week before their ship departed from that city and they arrived to LeRoy, Wisconsin on October 21, 1851. They arrived to Milwaukee, where Frank Sterr picked them up and bought them to LeRoy, where they had friends from Germany already living.

According to family records, Katherine Bruner was raised by her grandparents, Simon and Marie Hofbauer since her mother had died when Katherine was only nine.

Simon was a farmer in Bavaria and after arriving to LeRoy continued to farm.
